National Grid distributes electricity in the northeastern U.S. to approximately 3.3 million customers and gas in upstate New York to approximately 565,000 customers. In addition, it provides infrastructure and related services in areas, such as wireless network infrastructure for broadcast and mobile telephones, metering, grain liquefied natural gas import, interconnectors, and property. The company was formerly known as National Grid Transco plc and changed its name to National Grid plc in July 2005.
