It operates in three segments: Fixed Communications, Mobile Communications, and Private Communications. The Fixed Communications segment comprises access networks that transports information at high speeds; Internet protocol products, which include multiservice, multiprotocol switch platform, and a service router; and fixed solutions that provide applications and services, such as multimedia conferencing for businesses; and by applications, such as video over digital subscriber lines. It also offers optical networks that produces equipment to transport information for long distances over land and undersea, as well as for short distances in metropolitan and regional areas. The Mobile Communications segment provides a range of mobile communications products and services, including radio access, and core network hardware and software; applications hardware and software; and various services, including installation, maintenance, and operation systems. The Private Communications segment produces enterprise products that include voice and data, including traditional and IP telephone systems, call center software and applications, and IP networking products; develops satellite telecommunication products for broadband access, wireless local loop backhaul, and global system for global communications/general packet radio service backhaul. It also provides control and signaling system products and services for trains and subways worldwide. In addition, the company plans, designs, installs, operates, and maintains networks for its carrier and public sector customers. Alcatel offers its products and services through direct sales force and joint ventures. It serves wire-line and wireless carriers, as well as various private customers, such as enterprises, satellite operators, cable service providers, transport companies, utilities, the oil and gas, and government institutions. The company is headquartered in Paris, France.
