Alkermes, Inc. engages in the development of pharmaceutical products based on drug delivery technologies. The companys commercial product, Risperdal Consta, is an antipsychotic medication approved for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and is marketed worldwide. Its product candidate under development, Vivitrex, is a Medisorb formulation of naltrexone for the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence. The company has a pipeline of extended-release injectable and pulmonary drug products based on its proprietary technologies, ProLease and Medisorb, as well as inhaled drug products based on AIR technology. Alkermes is developing a Medisorb formulation for use in the treatment of Type II diabetes; a ProLease formulation of recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone for the treatment of infertility; and an inhaled formulation of epinephrine for the treatment of anaphylaxis, a systemic allergic reaction. The company has collaborations with Janssen-Cilag, Eli Lilly and Company, Serono S.A., and Amylin Pharmaceutical, Inc. Alkermes was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
