Alteon, Inc. engages in the discovery and development of small molecule drugs for diseases of aging and complications of diabetes. Its pharmaceutical candidates are based on Advanced Glycation End-Products pathway, a fundamental pathological process and inevitable consequence of aging that causes or contributes to medical disorders, such as cardiovascular, kidney, and eye diseases. The company is developing its lead product candidate, Alagebrium Chloride, for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Alteon has completed various phase II clinical trials of Alagebrium for heart failure and systolic hypertension, including distensibility improvement and remodeling in diastolic heart failure; systolic and pulse pressure hemodynamic improvement by restoring elasticity and systolic hypertension interaction with left ventricular remodeling; and a trial in cardiovascular compliance. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1986 as Geritech, Inc. and its name was changed to Alteon, Inc. in 1991. Alteon is headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey.
