Atmos Energy Corporation (AEM) and its subsidiaries engage in the distribution of natural gas to residential, commercial, public authority, and industrial customers. The company distributes natural gas through various sales and transportation arrangements in Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. AEM provides various natural gas management services, such as furnishing natural gas supplies at fixed and market-based prices, contract negotiation and administration, load forecasting, gas storage acquisition and management services, transportation services, peaking sales and balancing services, capacity utilization strategies, and gas price hedging through the use of derivative instruments to municipalities, natural gas utility systems, and industrial natural gas customers. As of September 30, 2004, the company served 1.7 million customers, as well as owned and operated approximately 47,616 miles of underground distribution and transmission lines. In addition, it also transports natural gas for other companies through its distribution system. AEM was founded in 1906 and changed its name to Atmos Energy Corporation in 1988. The company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Atmos Energy Corporation acquired the natural gas distribution and pipeline operations of TXU Gas Company in October 2004.
