The company offers current accounts, savings, mortgages, consumer loans, and general insurance to personal and corporate customers worldwide; banking services to small businesses; banking, investment products, and advice to affluent customers in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as provides relationship banking to its larger and medium business customers in the United Kingdom. These services are offered through integrated channels, comprising the branch network, automated teller machines, telephone banking, and online banking. Barclays offers private banking, offshore banking, stock broking and asset management services, as well as financial planning services to affluent, high net worth, and corporate clients, primarily in the United Kingdom and continental Europe. It operates a multibrand credit card and consumer lending business that processes card payments for retailers and merchants; and issues cards to corporate customers. The company also operates Barclays Capital, a global investment bank, which engages in fixed income, foreign exchange, commodities, emerging markets, money markets sales, trading and research, prime brokerage, and equity related activities, as well as involves in the origination, sales, trading, and research relating to loans, debt capital markets, structured capital markets, commercial mortgage backed securities, private equity, and large asset leasing. In addition, Barclays offers structured investment strategies, such as indexing; global asset allocation; and risk controlled active products, including hedge funds, as well as provides related investment services, such as securities lending, cash management, and portfolio transition services. The company was incorporated in 1896 as Barclay & Company Limited and its name was changed to Barclays Bank Limited in 1917. Later, it changed its name to Barclays PLC in 1985. Barclays is headquartered in London.
