Biomira, Inc. engages in the research and development of therapeutic products for the treatment of cancer. The company focuses on developing synthetic vaccines and novel strategies for cancer immunotherapy. Biomiras two cancer vaccine candidates are Theratope and BLP25. Theratope is a carbohydrate vaccine to induce both humoral (antibody) and cellular responses. Patients with cancers of the breast, colon, ovary, or pancreas have received Theratope vaccine in Biomira-sponsored Phase I, II, and III clinical trials. The company's other cancer vaccine candidate is a peptide vaccine, BLP25 Liposome Vaccine (L-BLP25). This vaccine has a 25 amino acid sequence and has been enhanced through being encapsulated in a liposome. L-BLP25 is designed to induce an immune response to cancer cells. Biomira has collaboration agreements with Chiron Corporation, Merck KGaA, Oncodigm BioPharma, Inc., and Prima BioMed. The company was incorporated in 1985 and is headquartered in Edmonton, Canada.
