Clean Harbors, Inc. engages in the provision of environmental services and operation of nonnuclear hazardous waste treatment facilities in North America. It offers a range of environmental services, including technical services, site services, and industrial services. The companys technical services include collection, transport, treatment, and disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous wastes; and physical treatment, resource recovery, fuels blending, incineration, landfill disposal, wastewater treatment, lab chemical disposal, and explosives management services. It offers CleanPack services, which include the collection, identification, and categorization; specialized packaging; transportation; and disposal of laboratory chemicals and household hazardous wastes. The company provides site services, including confined space entry for tank cleaning, site decontamination, large remediation projects, selective demolition, spill cleanup, railcar cleaning, product recovery and transfer, scarifying and media-blasting, and vacuum services, as well as used oil and oil products recycling, and PCB management and disposal. In addition, the company provides industrial services that include management of hazardous, nonhazardous, and wet and dry materials; chemical cleaning, hydro blasting, liquid/dry vacuuming, sodium bicarbonate blasting, line cleaning, boiler cleanouts, and steam cleaning of its customers' process equipment and systems; and video inspection, dewatering, and onsite material processing. As of December 31, 2004, Clean Harbors operated 48 hazardous waste management properties, which included 5 incineration locations; 9 commercial landfills; 7 wastewater treatment plants; 20 treatment, storage and disposal facilities; and 7 facilities, which specialized in PCB management. Its principal customers include utility, chemical, petroleum, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, transportation and industrial firms, educational institutions, other environmental service companies, and government agencies in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The company was founded by Alan S. McKim in 1980 and is based in Braintree, Massachusetts.
