EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. (EDP) engages in the generation, supply, and distribution of electricity, as well as in the provision of telecommunication and information technology (IT)services. It creates power for consumption in both the public electricity system and the independent electricity system. As of December 31, 2003, the company operated 25 hydroelectric generating facilities in the binding system, with 63 units and an aggregate installed capacity of 3,903 mega watts. EDP has interests in various generation projects in Brazil. The companys telecommunication services include Web-design, multimedia, consultancy services, and voice and data services. Its IT services comprise systems integration, process and applications outsourcing, information technologies infrastructures, geo-referenced systems, complementary processes, and graphic and finishing solutions. EDP also owns a 56% ownership in Oni, a fixed line operator in both Portugal and Spain. In addition, the company offers various services relating to water, gas, engineering, laboratory testing, vocational training, and real estate management. The company was incorporated in 1976. It was formerly known as EDP - Electricidade de Portugal, S.A. and changed its name to EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. in October 2004. EDP is headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal.
