Companhia Paranaense de Energia-COPEL engages in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in the Brazilian State of Parana. As of December 31, 2003, it generated electricity at 17 hydroelectric plants and one thermoelectric plant, with a total installed capacity of 4,549.6 megawatts. The company also involves in telecommunications business; and holds interests in other companies operating in such areas, as power generation and power marketing, piped gas, sanitation, fixed and mobile telephone services, Internet service providers, power and infrastructure projects, research and development, power and project management, and agribusiness. It also has operations in Argentina, Chile, China, Colombia, Malaysia, and Paraguay. The companys customers include supermarkets, universities, banks, Internet providers, television networks, and telecommunication utilities. Companhia Paranaense was formed in 1954 and is based in Parana, Brazil.
