Mexican Economic Development, Inc. (MED) operates as a beverage company in Latin America. It operates through four subsidiaries: Coca-Cola FEMSA, S.A. de C.V.; FEMSA Cerveza, S.A. de C.V.; FEMSA Comercio, S.A. de C.V.; and FEMSA Empaques, S.A. de C.V. The companys principal subsidiary, Coca-Cola FEMSA, produces, distributes, and markets beverages in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina, as well as offers bottled water, beer, and other beverages in certain territories. FEMSA Cerveza produces, distributes, and markets beer in the United States and Mexico. FEMSA Comercio operates a chain of convenience stores in Mexico primarily under the name, Oxxo. As of December 31, 2003, it operated 2,798 Oxxo stores. FEMSA Empaques produces and distributes packaging materials primarily to the beverage industry in Mexico. It offers aluminum beverage cans and tops, bottle caps, glass beverage bottles, labels, and plastic cases, as well as coolers and commercial refrigeration equipment. MED was incorporated in 1936 and was formerly known as Valores Industriales, S.A. The company is headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico.
