Genaera Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company, develops medicines for serious diseases from genomics and natural products. It focuses on anti-angiogenesis and respiratory diseases. As of June 25, 2004, the company had three products in development. These include squalamine, an anti-angiogenesis treatment for eye disease and cancer; interleukin-9 antibody, a respiratory treatment based on the discovery of a genetic cause of asthma; and LOMUCIN, a mucoregulator to treat the overproduction of mucus and secretions involved in various forms of chronic respiratory disease. The company has research collaboration and licensing agreement with MedImmune, Inc. Genaera was incorporated in 1987. The company was formerly known as Magainin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and changed its name to Genaera Corporation in 2001. Genaera is headquartered in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. In April 2004, the company was issued a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark (P&T) Office covering the composition of matter of the gene for the human calcium-activated chloride channel (hCLCA1) and methods for producing the encoded protein. This patent also covers vectors and transformed cells containing the hCLCA1 gene product, and their use for recombinant production of the hCLCA1 protein. In May 2004, it was issued another patent by the P&T Office covering the use of LOMUCIN and certain 2-aminophenyl acetic acid compounds to treat diseases characterized by mucin production.
