Golf Trust of America, Inc. engages in the ownership of upscale golf courses throughout the United States. As of August 9, 2004, it owned five properties, which represented nine golf courses. Four of these properties were owned and managed by it while the other property was managed by Westin Management South. The company was incorporated in 1996. It initially qualified as a real estate investment trust (REIT), but lost its REIT status in 2002. The company’s stockholders approved a plan for the complete liquidation and eventual dissolution of the company in 2001. Accordingly, Golf Trust of America engages in an ongoing orderly liquidation of its assets. Pursuant to the plan of liquidation, it sold 38 of the 47 golf courses in which it held interests in August 2004. Golf Trust of America is based in Charleston, South Carolina.
