MacroChem Corporation engages in the development and commercialization of specialty pharmaceutical products by employing Soft Enhancement of Percutaneous Absorption (SEPA), its patented drug delivery technology. SEPA compounds, when properly combined with drugs, provide pharmaceutical formulations that are used in the transdermal delivery of drugs into the skin or into the bloodstream. The company is developing investigational new drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (Topiglan), testosterone deficiency (Opterone), and fungal infections of the toenails (EcoNail). The company is conducting a dose proportionality clinical study of Opterone cream formulation; and a Phase I study of EcoNail in patients with onychomycosis. In addition, it offers a series of low molecular weight polymers, MacroDerm, for use in cosmetics and in the superficial dermal delivery of pharmaceuticals. MacroChem was founded in 1981 by Carlos M. Samour. The company is based in Lexington, Massachusetts.
