As of January 19, 2005, it served approximately 1.4 million customers in eastern and central Massachusetts, including 1.1 million electric distribution customers in 81 communities, and 300,000 natural gas distribution customers in 51 communities. The company also conducts nonutility, unregulated operations, such as liquefied natural gas service and telecommunications. NSTAR was created in 1999 pursuant to the merger of BEC Energy and Commonwealth Energy System. The company is based in Boston, Massachusetts.
