Progress Energy, Inc. operates as an integrated energy company primarily in the southeast region of the United States. It operates through Progress Energy Carolinas Electric (PEC Electric), Progress Energy Florida (PEF), Competitive Commercial Operations (CCO), Fuels, and Synthetic Fuels segments. The PEC Electric segment and PEF segment are primarily engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electric energy in portions of North Carolina and South Carolina, and Florida, respectively. These electric operations also distribute and sell electricity to other utilities, primarily on the east coast of the United States. The CCO segment engages in nonregulated electric generation operations and marketing activities primarily in Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. The Fuels segment primarily engages in natural gas production in Texas and Louisiana; and coal mining, coal terminal services, and fuel transportation and delivery in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. The Synthetic Fuels segment engages in the production and sale of synthetic fuels, and the operation of synthetic fuel facilities for outside parties in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia. The company had approximately 24,000 megawatts of electric generation capacity and serves approximately 2.9 million retail electric customers, as of December 31, 2004. Progress Energy was incorporated in 1999. The company was formerly known as CP&L Energy, Inc. Progress Energy is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina.
