The bank was founded in 1864 as the Merchants Bank and changed its name to Merchants' Bank of Halifax in 1969. It changed its name to The Royal Bank of Canada in 1901. Further, the bank changed its name to Royal Bank of Canada in 1990. Royal Bank is headquartered in Toronto, Canada.
